Dutch Design & Synthesis Guest Lecture: Prof. Gerard Roelfes

Published on

Prof. Gerard Roelfes visited Syncom as part our Dutch Design & Synthesis guest lectures. His talk, entitled “Hybrid Catalysis: merging the power of enzyme- and transition metal catalysis” disclosed the recent advances of his group in the field of bio-inspired catalysis. Using nature as a source of inspiration, Prof. Roelfes has developed novel catalysts based on the combination of biomolecules, such of DNA or proteins, with metals to perform enantioselective reactions.

Gerard Roelfes obtained his MSc and PhD (2000) under the supervision of Prof. Ben L. Feringa at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. After his PhD he went for a post-doc with Prof. Donald Hilvert at the ETH-Zurich (Switzerland). In 2003 he returned to the University of Groningen as a junior research group leader. He became Assistant Professor in 2006, Associate Professor in 2010 and since 2015 is Full Professor of Biomolecular Chemistry & Catalysis.
